Community Prosecution Unit
The Community Prosecution Unit assigns prosecutors to several of the Detroit Police Department Precincts. Their primary focus is non-fatal shootings and gang and group violence involving firearms. The community prosecutors are imbedded in specific precincts where they develop an in-depth knowledge of crime related issues that are particular to that precinct. They assist the police by providing advice, and assisting in the investigative process, authorizing search warrants, conducting investigative subpoenas, approving warrants and vertically prosecuting a significant number of their cases. These dedicated prosecutors are frequently on call nights and weekends to ensure that questions are answered, and cases are handled efficiently throughout the judicial process. They are an invaluable resource to the officers and community by prosecuting a significant volume of high-end assault cases where firearms are used. Their vertical prosecution of cases helps to ease the anxiety of reluctant witnesses, supports the investigative process and continuity through the judicial process. Currently the community Prosecution Unit is servicing Detroit Police Department’s 2nd, 8th and 9th Precincts. As well as the Detroit Police Department’s Gang Intel and FIT Task Force.
