Wayne County WIC Infant Feeding & Lactation Service
Wayne County WIC promotes human milk feeding as the recommended method of infant feeding and supports families in achieving their individual infant feeding goals. Prenatal education is offered on the benefits of human milk feeding, along with ongoing lactation support after birth. Our offices are breastfeeding-friendly and provide care from trained Breastfeeding Peer Counselors and International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs).
Services
- In-person and telehealth (video, phone, and text) lactation services provided by IBCLCs and Breastfeeding Peer Counselors for all pregnant and lactating WIC participants.
- Education and support for all methods of human milk feeding, including feeding directly at the breast, expressing milk by hand or pump, exclusive pumping, combination feeding, and returning to work or school while providing human milk.
- Distribution of breast pumps and lactation supplies, as appropriate.
Goals and Objectives
- Support families in making informed infant feeding decisions and help them meet their personal human milk feeding goals.
- Increase the number of infants who receive human milk.
- Increase the duration of human milk feeding, whether directly at the breast, expressed, or through a combination of feeding methods.
- Provide compassionate, evidence-based lactation support throughout pregnancy, the first year of the infant's life, and for as long as the family chooses to continue providing human milk.
