Respiratory Illness Dashboard
About the Wayne County Respiratory Illness Dashboard
The Wayne County Respiratory Illness Dashboard shows health data on COVID-19, influenza (flu), respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and overall respiratory illness activity in Out-Wayne County. Out-Wayne County refers to Wayne County communities outside of the City of Detroit and is the local public health area served by Wayne County Health, Human, and Veterans Services.
Tracking local respiratory illness activity helps people who live, work, learn, and play in Out-Wayne County understand current trends and make informed decisions to keep themselves, their families, and their communities safe.
Respiratory illnesses, including COVID-19, flu, and RSV, are common infections that can affect people of all ages. Young children, older adults, pregnant people, and people with chronic conditions or weakened immune systems are at greater risk of serious illness. Monitoring these viruses helps us see the overall spread of respiratory viruses in our community.
Respiratory Activity Levels
Respiratory activity levels help make complex health data simpler and easier to understand. They show how much illness activity is in the community by counting visits to emergency rooms and urgent care clinics. Emergency room and urgent care data show changes quickly and help spot new trends early.
There are five activity levels, ranging from Very Low to Very High:
- Very Low levels are usually seen during the summer months (May through September).
- Higher levels usually happen during respiratory season (between October and May). However, levels can sometimes go up in the summer, especially for COVID-19.
- As levels go up, think about your risk and the risk of people close to you. Layering prevention tips from the picture at the bottom of the page can be especially helpful to stay healthy and protect yourself and those you care about.
