Public Swimming Pool Inspections

Swimming pools and spas can be the source of many diseases and injuries, such as Giardia, Cryptosporidia, and E.coli, as well as slips, falls, and accidental entrapment. Cryptosporidia is the cause of diarrheal illnesses, the most common recreational water illness (RWI). RWIs are caused by germs spread by swallowing, breathing in mists or aerosols of, or having contact with contaminated water in swimming pools, hot tubs, water parks, water play areas, and interactive fountains (also lakes, rivers, or oceans). In addition to gastrointestinal illness, RWIs can be the cause of skin, ear, respiratory, eye, neurologic and wound infections. For health and safety reasons, the proper construction, maintenance, and operation of public swimming pools and spas is of significant public health importance.

There are close to 600 public pools and spas (seasonal and year round operations) under permit in Wayne County, including those located in apartment complexes, hotels, motels, parks, schools, health clubs, and other health-regulated recreational establishments. All of these pools are inspected by environmental health professionals to identify problems, list violations of Michigan's Public Act and Rules governing public swimming pools, review water sample data and monthly operation reports, and provide written notification of necessary corrections.

Annual Indoor Pool Inspection Fee

Convenient, secure, paperless submittal. Forms of payment accepted: eCheck or Credit Card (Mastercard, VISA & Discover). Bank service fees apply: eCheck $1.00 or Credit/Debit cards 2.49% against the total payment. Online payments cannot be accepted for Change of Ownership or New pools.

Send copy of invoice with checks payable to WAYNE COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT to the address listed on invoice.

 

In-Person

Environmental Health office is located in the East Wing (off of Venoy Road ).

Office Hours

Monday - Friday 8:00 am - 4:00 pm.

Closed from 11:30 am - 12:30 pm.

 

 

Campgrounds

The Environmental Health (EH) Division of Wayne County conducts inspections on public and private campgrounds annually to assess compliance with Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) Campgrounds Law (Part 125 of 1978, PA 368, as amended). It is required that anyone planning a temporary camping event, where five or more temporary living units (tents, campers, RVs, etc.) must obtain a temporary camping permit from the EH Division.
