Garza successfully ran for State Representative in 2018, and went on to win re-election in 2020. Garza served as State Representative from 2019 - 2023. During his four years serving in the Michigan House of Representatives, Garza sat on the committees on Agriculture and Rural Development (Democratic Vice Chair), Local Government and Municipal Finance, and Regulatory Reform.
Garza's return to public service on the Wayne County Commission stems from a deep-seated belief in civic duty and a desire to facilitate and be part of positive change. He is eager to bring fresh ideas and perspectives to the table. Garza's approach to public service is collaborative and inclusive, believing that the best solutions arise from a diversity of voices and a collective commitment to the common good. He has a proven track record of working with Republicans, Independents, and Democrats to get things done for his community. Garza passed a record eight Public Acts (PAs) into law during his two terms serving in the Michigan House of Representatives. He was able to successfully work across the aisle to pass more bi-partisan legislation focused on his community than any other Representative from his party.
He and his wife Amira live in Taylor with their two year old son Rami, and dog Gizmo.
Commissioner Garza serves as the Chair of the Committee on Public Safety, Judiciary and Homeland Security, Vice Chair of the Committee on Seniors and Veterans Affairs, and member of the Committee on Audit.
