Wayne County Commissioner Irma Clark-Coleman was recognized June 22 by having a pavilion named in her honor at the new Huntington Park within the Marygrove Community in Detroit.
Commissioner Clark-Coleman was instrumental in helping create the city's newest neighborhood park, which is in her district.
The announcement was made by Wayne County Executive Warren C. Evans during a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the park.
"Members of the Marygrove Community Association have long sought this new park and I am pleased to have been able to work with them to make it a reality," Commissioner Clark-Coleman said. "To give this struggling neighborhood a shot in the arm toward revitalization is critical. Residents will see these beautiful improvements to their neighborhood and want to do more themselves.
"Creating a greenspace will give the community that shot in the arm," Commissioner Clark-Coleman added. "Just as blight spreads, so does restoration." Huntington Park is located on Kentucky Street, between Puritan and Florence, east of Wyoming Avenue and south of the Lodge Expressway. It includes the renovation and beautification of three formerly vacant lots into new park space.
The project received $47,000 in financing from Wayne County's Department on Economic Development through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA).
