Nature Centers & Interpretive Programs

Wayne County Parks boasts two outstanding facilities where the public can learn about our natural and historical heritage.

Nankin Mills Interpretive Center in Westland and Crosswinds Marsh in Sumpter Township both offer fun and informative programming for school, scout, home school and family groups.

Nankin Mills Interpretive Center

The Nankin Mills Interpretive Center is currently open Monday - Saturday from 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM (closed for lunch from Noon - 1:00 PM). The first floor exhibits featuring live fish, reptiles and amphibian displays are open. The second and third floors are currently closed for renovations.

This historic grist mill houses interpretive displays highlighting Native American history, water-powered settlements and Underground Railroad history along the Rouge River, and Henry Ford's project to convert mills in southeast Michigan, including Nankin Mills, into Village Industry plants which manufactured car parts. Along with the Rouge River history, exhibits and programs feature nature interpretation of the Rouge River watershed, including live fish, reptile and amphibian displays.

Crosswinds Marsh Interpretive Preserve

For nature enthusiasts with an interest in wetlands and wildlife, Crosswinds Marsh is a must-see. You can explore diverse wetland habitats where more than 240 species of birds and 40 species of mammals have been identified. Crosswinds Marsh is home to a nesting pair of bald eagles, beaver and other exciting native wildlife.
