Lyft Driver Charged in Detroit Fatal Car Crash

Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Theopris Mays, 40, of Herndon, Virginia, in connection with a car crash that killed Andre Boynton, 60, and Carla Boynton, 57, both of Durham, North Carolina. Defendant Mays was working as a Lyft driver at the time of the incident.
On February 22, 2026, at approximately 10:15 a.m., Detroit police officers were dispatched to a warehouse located in the 6000 block of Rosa Parks Boulevard for a reported single motor vehicle accident. Upon their arrival, officers observed the defendant’s vehicle upright against a loading dock door with both victims trapped inside and unresponsive. Medics arrived on the scene and pronounced both victims deceased.
It is alleged that Defendant Mays was driving recklessly at a high rate of speed when he lost control of his vehicle and crashed into the building, fatally injuring Mr. and Mrs. Boynton. It is further alleged that Defendant Mays fled from the scene on foot. Investigation by the Detroit Police Department led to the arrest of the defendant a short time later.
Theopris Mays has been charged with two counts of Second-Degree Murder, one count of Reckless Driving Causing Death, and one count of Leaving the Scene of an At-Fault Accident – Causing Death. *
He was arraigned on February 25, 2026, in 36th District Court, and received a $500,000 cash/surety bond. A bond redetermination hearing is scheduled for February 27, 2026, before Judge William McConico. The Probable Cause Conference is scheduled for March 5, 2026, before Judge Shawn Jacque.
