Dearborn Man Charged with Assaulting Police During Welfare Check

Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Charles William Housman, Jr., 52, of Dearborn, in connection with pointing a shotgun at police officers who were conducting a wellness check, in an incident that led to an officer‑involved shooting.

On July 24, 2026, at approximately 10:57 p.m., Dearborn police officers were dispatched to a residence in the 24000 block of New York Street for a welfare check. Upon their arrival, it is alleged that Defendant Housman exited the residence armed with a shotgun. It is further alleged that Defendant Housman turned towards the officers and pointed the shotgun in their direction, prompting the officers to discharge their department-issued firearms striking the defendant with a non-fatal wound to his left leg. Medics arrived on the scene and transported Defendant Housman to a local hospital for treatment.

Charles Williams Housman, Jr. has been charged with one count of Felonious Assault, one count of Felony Firearm, one count of Possession of a Firearm Under the Influence, and one count of Disturbing the Peace. *

He was arraigned today in 19th District Court before Judge Gene Hunt. The defendant received a bond of $50,000/10% with a GPS tether. His Probable Cause Conference is on August 5, 2026, and his Preliminary Examination is on August 12, 2026.
