Wayne County Commissioners today honored Susan T. Mosey, the longtime executive director of Midtown Detroit, Inc., during the regular commission meeting.

Mosey has served for 30 years with Midtown Detroit, a nonprofit responsible for marketing, real estate and small business development in the city's New Center and University Cultural Center. Her tenure also includes an additional six years with its predecessor organization the University Cultural Center Association.

"Sue's leadership is to be commended as the growth in businesses throughout Midtown has led to a community full of excitement and vigor and one that other areas of our proud city can emulate," Wayne County Commission Chair Alisha Bell (D-Detroit) said.

Mosey has been called "The Mayor of Midtown" for her involvement in such projects as the creation of the Festival of the Arts, Noel Night and D-lectricity, the district's nighttime exhibition of art and light, as well as development on the Inns on Ferry Street.

"Her vision and leadership have truly made a difference," said Commissioner Jonathan C. Kinloch (D-Detroit), whose district includes the Midtown area.

Mosey told commissioners she will remain active post-retirement, including assisting with a plan to link area museums as well as making the Wayne State University campus more accessible for walking.

She has also been noted as an advocate for women in leadership positions in businesses and nonprofits.

This year, she became the first woman to ever receive the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award from the Urban Land Institute of Michigan.
