Procedures announced to fill Wayne County Commission vacancy

MCL 46.412 provides that "[w]hen a vacancy occurs in the office of commissioner by death, resignation, removal from the district, or removal from office, the vacancy shall be filled by appointment within 30 days by the county board of commissioners of a resident and registered voter of that district."

Section 3.112 of the Wayne County Charter provides that "[i]f a vacancy occurs in the office of a Commissioner by death, resignation, removal from the district, or removal from office, the vacancy shall be filled by appointment within 30 days, by a majority of Commissioners serving. The appointee shall be a registered voter of the district belonging to the same political party as its previous Commissioner."

The vacancy in Wayne County Commission District 2 for the term beginning January 1, 2021 and expiring December 31, 2022 shall be filled as follows:

  • The Wayne County Commission will accept credentials from Monday, December 21, 2020 to Monday, December 28, 2020 at 5:00 p.m.
  • All credentials, consisting of a minimum of a cover letter, resume and proof that he/she is a registered voter in District 2, must be submitted through the Wayne County webpage.
  • All credentials will be reviewed by the Chairperson of the County Commission. The Commission Chairperson will select a limited number of candidates for interviews.
  • On January 4 and 5, 2021, the Wayne County Commission's Committee on Rules will interview all selected candidates at a meeting open to the public.
  • The Committee on Rules will recommend one candidate to the full Commission.
  • On January 7, 2021, the Wayne County Commission will vote to appoint a candidate to fill the vacancy in District 2.
