On Friday, Aug. 20, the Julie Plawecki Memorial Highway was dedicated at a commemorative luncheon held at Hype Athletics, in Dearborn Heights.
A former educator serving as a State Representative representing Dearborn Heights, Inkster and a part of Livonia when she unexpectedly passed on June 25, 2016, Representative Plawecki was remembered as a great woman who championed services for children, among other causes.
A section of Telegraph Road between Warren and Ford Roads in her hometown of Dearborn Heights will now be known as the Julie Plawecki Memorial Highway, with appropriate signs noting the designation.
The dedication ceremony also served to raise over $10,000 contributed by Rep. Plawecki's family and friends, which will fund the distribution of 1,000 back packs with school supplies to area children, in an annual program administered by Hype Athletics.
Julie Plawecki was remembered in remarks by Christine Greig, former Michigan House Democratic Leader and Rachel Plawecki, Julie's daughter and a member of Governor Gretchen Whitmer's staff. Ali Sayed, CEO of Hype Athletics, discussed the importance of the back pack distribution program and thanked the attendees for their support.
Commissioner David Knezek, (D-Dearborn Heights), remarked at the time of Rep. Plawecki's passing that "Julie was just a great woman who had a heart of gold. She was a bulldog on issues and was the epitome of class. She was a model Representative and she got things done. Her constituents couldn't have asked for better." C
Commissioners Sam Baydoun (D-Dearborn) and Joe Palamara (D-Grosse Ile) also attended the ceremony, and along with Commissioner Knezek are pictured with Judge Mark Plawecki of the 20th District Court, Julie's husband.
