Warrant Request Denied in 2021 Case Involving Detroit Commissioner
Published on January 22, 2026
On December 2, 2021, charges issued for now Detroit Commissioner Darious Morris, in connection with an incident that occurred on November 30, 2021. It is alleged that he had a pistol concealed on his person and he was charged with Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Ammunition -Possession by a Felon, Carrying a Concealed Weapon and Felony Firearm. On January 15, 2026, a Detroit News reporter inquired why the case was dismissed at the preliminary examination. The case was dismissed because several officers failed to appear to testify and as a result the People could not proceed. At the time, according to our protocol when officers fail to appear on a case, WCPO asked that the case be re-issued. Since that did not happen WCPO requested that it be re-submitted for review.
The case was re-submitted on January 20, 2026. During the warrant review it was confirmed that the weapon in the case was destroyed by the Detroit Police Department in 2024. Due to the lack of this key piece of evidence the warrant request has been denied.
