Detroit Man Charged in Drive-By Shooting on Whithorn Street

Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Kim Wright, Jr., 28, of Detroit, in connection with the non-fatal shooting of a 48-year-old man of Detroit. Aspects of the case related to other potential male victims remains under investigation.

On July 21, 2026, at approximately 7:11 p.m., Detroit police officers were dispatched to a residence in the 11000 block of Whithorn Street for a reported shooting. It is alleged that Defendant Wright approached the victim and fired a rifle from his vehicle, before fleeing the scene. The 48-year-old victim was privately transported to a local hospital for treatment. Investigation by the Detroit Police Department led to the arrest of the defendant on July 23, 2026.

Kim Wright, Jr. has been charged with one count of Assault with Intent to Murder, one count of Assault with Intent to do Great Bodily Harm, one count of Discharge of a Firearm in or at a Building, one count of Discharge of a Firearm from a Motor Vehicle, one count of Possession of a Firearm by a Prohibited Person, and five counts of Felony Firearm. *

He was arraigned this morning in 36th District Court before Magistrate Delphia Burton and received a $75,000 cash/surety bond with a GPS tether and a curfew of 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.. A bond re-determination hearing is scheduled for August 3, 2026, at 9:00 a.m., before Judge William McConico. The probable cause conference is scheduled for August 6, 2026, at 8:30 a.m., and the preliminary examination is scheduled for August 13, 2026, at 8:45 a.m., before Judge Patricia Jefferson.
