Grosse Pointe Teen Sentenced in Grosse Pointe Farms Fatal Car Crash
Published on June 13, 2025
On March 21, 2024, Prosecutor Kym Worthy charged a 17-year-old male, in connection with a car crash that killed Flynn Mackrell, 18, both of Grosse Pointe. The defendant is not being charged as an adult; he has been adult designated. This means that upon conviction an adult designation allows the judge to have the option of sentencing the defendant as a juvenile, or as an adult, or to fashion a blended juvenile sentence with the option of imposing an adult sentence if the juvenile is not rehabilitated.
On November 17, 2023, at approximately 9:05 p.m., Grosse Pointe Farms police officers were dispatched to the area of Ridge Road and Moran Road for a reported single vehicle crash. Upon their arrival, officers located the defendant belted into the driver’s seat and the victim unresponsive, belted into the passenger seat. Medics arrived on the scene and pronounced Mr. Mackrell deceased.
It is alleged that the defendant was driving at a high rate of speed in a residential area when he lost control of the vehicle and left the roadway, striking a utility pole and a tree, fatally wounding Mr. Mackrell. The defendant was charged with Second-Degree Murder. *
“The evidence in this case will show that the defendant was driving in a residential neighborhood at speeds that rival speeding on our Michigan freeways. Sadly, Mr. Mackrell lost his life as a result. We know that the rules of the road exist for a reason, speed kills. Driving 25 in a residential neighborhood is mandated, not a mere suggestion,” said Prosecutor Kym Worthy.
The Preliminary Hearing was held on March 21, 2024, before Referee Leslie Graves at the Lincoln Hall of Justice and the defendant received a $10,000 cash/surety bond. The defendant is represented by attorney Gabi Silver.
On March 3, 2025, the juvenile respondent entered a guilty plea to Manslaughter with a Motor Vehicle with an adult designation.
Today, he was sentenced before Judge Michael McClory. He imposed a sentence to immediate juvenile placement in a Level 2 placement facility. This is an out of home residential facility placement. The duration of placement is determined by progress in treatment and a youth may be escalated or de-escalated based on the youth’s progress. Currently, the respondent is remanded to the Juvenile Detention Facility while awaiting his Level 2 placement.
*The charges are allegations and defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
