COVID-19 infection rates fall sharply, vaccinations continue
Published on February 25, 2021
The number of new infections continued to fall in Wayne County over the past two weeks, county COVID-19 strategist Dr. Mouhanad Hammami said during Tuesday’s meeting of the Wayne County Commission’s Committee on Health and Human Services.
The average 83 new infections that were recorded over the past week represented a sharp drop from the average 102 per day recorded the previous week, Dr. Hammami said.
First and second dose vaccinations are now complete for critical and long-term health care workers, while second dose vaccinations continue for public safety workers.
First and second dose vaccinations are also in progress for those 75 and older and those 65-74 with serious medical issues.
In other updates:
- The county this week received 23,900 vaccine doses, its largest one-week total to date.
- No additional cases of COVID-19 variant B.1.1.7, the so-called U.K. variant, have been reported beyond the nine already reported cases in Wayne County.
Committee Chair Monique Baker McCormick (D-Detroit) is also advocating for even distribution of vaccines for all communities.
Dr. Hammami’s presentation is available on the Wayne County Commission YouTube channel.
