No charges will issue against a 22-year-old suspect in connection with the fatal shootings of Lester Owens III, 24, Jasmine Sheeler, 24, and Trevor Sheeler, Jr.,19, all of Detroit.

On April 19, 2026, at approximately 2:59 a.m., Detroit police officers were dispatched to a gas station in the 21700 block of West McNichols Road for a reported shooting. Upon their arrival, officers located Ms. Sheeler suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest, and Mr. Owens and Mr. Sheeler suffering from gunshot wounds to the head. Medics arrived on the scene and pronounced Ms. Sheeler deceased. Mr. Owens and Mr. Sheeler were transported to a local hospital for treatment but succumbed to their injuries and were pronounced deceased a short time later.

It is alleged that there was a car accident between the driver’s vehicle and the victims’ vehicle. The victims followed the driver to a gas station in the 21700 block of West McNichols Road. While there the three exited their vehicle and went to the driver’s side door, opened it, and engaged in a physical altercation with the driver. During the physical altercation, the suspect who was seated in the rear of the vehicle fired a weapon fatally wounding the three victims.

A warrant request was submitted by the Detroit Police Department on Monday, April 20, 2026.  Under Michigan law a person can use deadly force if they reasonably believe it is necessary to prevent imminent death or serious bodily harm to themselves or others..  After a careful review of the facts and evidence WCPO has determined that the warrant will be denied for insufficient evidence to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the suspect did not act in lawful self-defense and in defense of others.

*The charges are allegations and defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
