Two Charged in 2022 Homicide of 15-Year-Old Girl

Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Russell Deshawn-Deangelo McGilary,  23, and Andrew Angelo Walker, Jr., 23, both of Detroit, in connection with the fatal shooting of 15-year-old Janiya Brown, of Berkley. The victim and the two defendants knew each other.

On Wednesday, May 11, 2022, at approximately 10:01 a.m., Detroit police officers were dispatched to the 8800 block of Burnette Street for a dead person observed. Upon their arrival, officers located the victim lying unresponsive outside of a vehicle, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Medics arrived on the scene and pronounced Ms. Brown deceased. 

It is alleged that Defendant Walker physically assaulted the victim with a handgun. It is further alleged that Defendant McGilary and Defendant Walker produced and fired handguns multiple times at the victim, fatally wounding her, before fleeing the scene. More complete facts and evidence will be placed on the record in court at the preliminary examination. 

Russell Deshawn McGilary and Andrew Angelo Walker, Jr. have been charged with First-Degree Murder and Felony Firearm.*

Defendant McGilary was arraigned and remanded to jail on May 28, 2026, in 36th District Court before Magistrate William Burton. Defendant Walker was arraigned and remanded to jail on June 4, 2026, in 36th District Court before Magistrate Delphia Burton. Their Probable Cause Conference is scheduled for June 12, 2026, at 8:30 a.m., before Judge Shawn Jacque. Please request a photograph of the defendants from the Detroit Police Department.
