Southgate Man Charged in Car Crash at Evans Terminal at DTW
Published on October 19, 2026
Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged David Alan Chamlee, 67, of Southgate, in connection with driving a vehicle through the Evans Terminal at Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DTW) in Romulus.
On May 29, 2026, at approximately 9:37 a.m., it is alleged that Defendant Chamlee was driving erratically at a high rate of speed on the eastbound service drive at DTW when he drove his vehicle over a curb and began traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of Rogell Drive. It is further alleged that the defendant made a sharp right turn and drove directly inside the Evans Terminal, failing to depress his brakes.
As a result of Defendant Chamlee’s alleged actions, there was significant damage to the glass doors, windows, and fixtures of the building. A woman of Quaker Hill, Connecticut and a woman of London, Ontario, had to flee from the oncoming car and were struck by glass and debris. Fortunately, none of the victims suffered serious physical injuries.
David Alan Chamlee has been charged with two counts of Assault with Intent to Murder, two counts of Assault with Intent to do Great Bodily Harm, two counts of Felonious Assault, and one count of Malicious Destruction of Property – Building Over $20,000. *
“When you go to an airport – or anywhere for that matter – you certainly do not expect cars to come crashing into the terminal. We are extremely lucky that on these two days neither terminal was crowded with people and that massive numbers of people were not injured or killed,” said Prosecutor Kym Worthy.
He was arraigned this afternoon via Zoom before Judge Brian Oakley in 34th District Court and received a $100,000/10% bond. The Probable Cause Conference is scheduled for October 27, 2026, at 8:30 a.m., and the Preliminary Examination is scheduled for November 5, 2026, at 1:30 p.m.

*The charges are allegations and defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
