Juvenile Charged with Possession of Weapon on School Property

Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged a 17-year-old juvenile male, of Detroit, in connection with possessing a weapon in a weapons-free school zone.

On January 13, 2026, at approximately 8:37 a.m., at Chandler Park Academy, located in the 20200 block of Kelly Road in Harper Woods, it is alleged that the juvenile brought an unsecured and unlicensed handgun into the school in his backpack. It is then alleged that the juvenile concealed the handgun in a locker. Harper Woods police officers were dispatched to the school and took the juvenile into custody.

The juvenile respondent has been charged with Carrying a Concealed Weapon, and Possession of a Weapon in a Weapons-Free School Zone.*

The Preliminary Hearing was held today at the Juvenile Detention Facility before Referee Lisa Winer. The juvenile received a $2,000/10% bond with the conditions of no possession of firearms or firearm accessories, no illegal drug use, and comply with school disciplinary action. His next court date is a Pretrial scheduled for January 27, 2026, at 10:00 a.m., before Referee Lachelle Logan via Zoom.
