Detroit Teen Charged in Downtown Detroit Non-Fatal Shooting

Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Ramon Javon Perez Smith, 17, of Detroit, in connection with the non-fatal shooting of 14-year-old boy, also of Detroit. Defendant Smith will be waived and tried as an adult defendant.
On May 17, 2026, at approximately 9:37 p.m., Detroit police officers were dispatched to the 1300 block of Farmer Street for a reported shooting. Upon their arrival, officers located the victim suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. Medics arrived on the scene and transported the victim to a local hospital for treatment.
It is alleged that Defendant Smith engaged in a physical altercation with a group containing the victim. It is further alleged that the defendant produced and fired a handgun multiple times into the group, striking the victim in the chest, before fleeing the scene. Investigation by the Detroit Police Department led to the arrest of the defendant a short time later.
Ramon Javon Perez Smith has been charged with Assault with Intent to Murder, Assault wiith Intent to do Great Bodily Harm, Felonious Assault, Carrying a Concealed Weapon, and three counts of Felony Firearm. *
The defendant was arraigned today and received a $500,000 cash bond, with a GPS tether, house arrest, and no contact with the victim or any other witness in this case. His bond re-determination hearing is before Judge McConico on Wednesday, May 27, 2026.
“We are thankful that the 14-year-old victim received immediate medical care and will survive this traumatic event,” said Prosecutor Kym Worthy.
