Detroit Man Sentenced in 4 Sexual Assaults Spanning from 1997 to 2004

On April 16, 2026, Prosecutor Kym Worthy charged  Akida Diaba Dudley, 51, in connection with four serial sexual assaults committed in the City of Detroit spanning from 1997 until 2004. None of the sexual assault survivors knew the defendant. The investigation was conducted by the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office Sexual Assault Kit Task Force detectives. On April 14, 2025, the Wayne County Fugitive Apprehension Team, comprised of members of the Wayne County Sheriff’s Department and the Detroit Police Department arrested and took the defendant into custody.

Victim #1 – Location Near Grand River and West Warren in Detroit

On June 9, 1997, the then 30-year-old complainant was standing around Grand River and West Warren near a bus stop.  While there the defendant pulled up next to her and got out of his car. He then produced a knife and forced her in his vehicle. He held the knife against her and began driving. He later pulled over and ordered the complainant out of the car and sexually assaulted her outside his car. She was left with little clothing while the defendant fled from the area in his car. The complainant went to a local hospital where she was examined, and a sexual assault kit (SAK) was completed. The SAK was later taken to the Detroit police where it went untested for several years.

Defendant Dudley was charged with Criminal Sexual Conduct First-Degree (Use of a Weapon), and Criminal Sexual Conduct Third-Degree (Force and Coercion).

Victim #2 – Location Near Livernois and Fenkell in Detroit

On September 22, 1997, at 1:00 a.m., the then 16-year-old complainant was standing at a bus stop on Livernois and Fenkell. The defendant was driving a sedan and asked her if she needed a ride. The victim believed she had seen him before at a motorcycle club and agreed to get in the car. The defendant drove her to a location near Livernois and asked her for sex. She refused and attempted to leave the car. The defendant had an ice pick and threatened to stab the victim. He sexually assaulted the victim and afterward he dropped her off in the area and left in his car. The victim had a sexual assault examination, and her sexual assault kit was taken to the Detroit police. The SAK was later taken to the Detroit Police property room but was not sent out for testing at that time.

Defendant Dudley was charged with Criminal Sexual Conduct First-Degree (Use of a Weapon), and Criminal Sexual Conduct Third-Degree (Force and Coercion).

Victim #3 – Location Near Woodward and Grand River

On February 10, 2002, the then 28-year-old complainant was walking around Woodward and Grand River when an unknown driver pulled up to her. The victim asked the defendant for a ride and voluntarily entered the vehicle. Once inside of the vehicle, the defendant drove to a nearby alley and produced a knife. He sexually assaulted the victim and afterward he dropped her off in the area and left in his car. The victim had a sexual assault examination, and her sexual assault kit was taken to the Detroit police. The SAK was later taken to the Detroit Police property room but was not sent out for testing at that time.

Victim #4 – Location Near Fenkell and Wyoming in Detroit

On August 9, 2004, the then 18-year-old complainant was walking around Fenkell and Wyoming in Detroit when an unknown man pulled up next to her with what she thought was a gun which caused her to enter into his car. Once inside the car she saw the weapon was knife that was held against her as he drove away. The defendant drove her to an unknown location and sexually assaulted her. She was released on Seven Mile Road and caught a bus to a friend’s house. She later made a police report, and a sexual assault kit was taken and turned over to the Detroit police in 2004 but was not sent out for testing at that time.

Defendant Dudley was charged with Criminal Sexual Conduct First-Degree (Use of a Weapon) , and Criminal Sexual Conduct Third-Degree (Force and Coercion).

“The four survivors in this case have been waiting many years for justice and accountability. Today they received justice. They will never get back what was violently taken from them and I hope that this brings them some semblance of closure.

"Since our sexual assault initiative started, we have convicted over 270 rapists and brought many more survivors justice. We are proud of our survivors that stood up and bravely went through the criminal justice process. And I am proud of my staff for relentlessly pursuing this work," said Prosecutor Kym Worthy.

On July 9, 2026, Defendant Dudley was found guilty of one First-Degree Criminal Sexual Conduct (Weapon Used) and one count of Third-Degree Criminal Sexual Conduct (Force or Coercion) by jury trial in each of his four cases.

Today, he was sentenced before Judge Margaret Van Houten to 29 years and 8 months to 45 years for four counts of First-Degree Criminal Sexual Conduct (Weapon Used) and 10 years to 22 years and 6 months for four counts of Third-Degree Criminal Sexual Conduct (Force or Coercion) in the Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC).

The case was tried by Wayne County Assistant Prosecutor Carley Kocks and Assistant Attorney General Aylysh Gallagher, who is a Project Consultant assigned to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office.
