Detroit Man Enters Guilty Plea in Torturing of Racoon
Published on September 10, 2026
On June 22, 2026, Prosecutor Kym Worthy charged Henry Bernard Montgomery, 38, of Detroit, with one count of Animals - Killing/Torturing - Third Degree in connection with burning and torturing a racoon.
On June 17, 2026, at approximately 10:44 a.m., at a residence in the 12000 block of Washburn Street in Detroit, it is alleged that Defendant Montgomery tortured and burned a racoon. It is further alleged that Defendant Montgomery posted a video on social media depicting the racoon being burned alive. An investigation by the Detroit Police Department led to the arrest of the defendant on June 20, 2026.
“It is hard for one to imagine what kind of perverse pleasure was being had here by the defendant’s alleged conduct. I would say that this case has unbelievable facts, but unfortunately that would not be a true statement. I should be surprised but I am not,” said Prosecutor Kym Worthy.
Today, Defendant Montgomery pleaded guilty as charged. The judge gave a Cobb's Evaluation that reflects the sentence that he will give at the sentence hearing. Judge Bradley Cobb indicated that he would give the defendant 18 months of probation, which is above the sentencing guidelines of 0-11 months. He must not own any pets during the term of probation, must complete 80 hours of community service, pay any fines and costs, and take an animal protection class.
His sentencing is scheduled for October 14, 2026, at 8:30 a.m., before Judge Bradley Cobb.
