Detroit Man Charged with Threatening Mayor of Detroit Mary Sheffield

Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Sterling Anthony Peters, 55, of Detroit, in connection with making a terrorist threat against Detroit Mayor Mary Sheffield.

On October 5, 2026, at approximately 9:06 a.m., it is alleged that Defendant Peters entered the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center (CAYMC) located in the 2 block of Woodward Avenue and attempted to walk into the mayor’s office. While being escorted out of the building by officers, it is alleged that the defendant threatened to shoot up the building. A short time later, it is alleged that Defendant Peters entered the Detroit Public Safety Headquarters (DPSH) located in the 1300 block of 3rd Avenue and was escorted out of the building by officers. It is alleged that Defendant Peters threatened physical harm to Mayor Sheffield.

Sterling Anthony Peters has been charged with one count of False Report or Threat of Terrorism. *

"We will absolutely not tolerate threats to elected officials including our judges. These threats are on the rise and are extremely concerning. We will prove the charge in this case in court beyond a reasonable doubt," said Prosecutor Kym Worthy.

He was arraigned yesterday afternoon before Magistrate Delphia Burton in 36th District Court and received a $50,000 cash/surety bond with a GPS tether and house arrest. A bond re-determination hearing is scheduled for October 12, 2026, at 9:00 a.m., before Judge William McConico. The Probable Cause Conference is scheduled for October 20, 2026, at 8:30 a.m., and the Preliminary Examination is scheduled for October 27, 2026, at 8:45 a.m., before Judge Marlena Taylor.
