Detroit Man Charged in Robbery and Fatal Shooting on Michigan Avenue

Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Mikeal Keyonne Franklin, 19, of Detroit, in connection with the fatal shooting of Keimonte Johnson, 21, also of Detroit.
On February 16, 2026, at approximately 4:26 p.m., Detroit police officers were dispatched to the 5800 block of Michigan Avenue for a reported shooting. Upon their arrival, officers located the victim in the front passenger seat of a vehicle, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Medics arrived on the scene and transported the victim to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased.
It is alleged that Defendant Franklin fired a handgun at the victim, fatally wounding him, before robbing him of his money and fleeing the scene. More complete facts and evidence in the case will be placed on the record in court at the preliminary examination.
Mikeal Keyonne Franklin has been charged with Premeditated First-Degree Murder, Felony Murder, Amed Robbery, Carrying a Concealed Weapon, Felonious Assault, and four counts of Felony Firearm.*
He was arraigned and remanded to jail on March 21, 2026, in 36th District Court. The Probable Cause Conference is scheduled for March 30, 2026, at 8:30 a.m., and the Preliminary Examination is scheduled for April 6, 2026, at 8:45 a.m., before Judge Shawn Jacque.
