Detroit Man Charged in Homicide of Girlfriend

Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Keith Custer, 69, of Detroit, in connection with the fatal shooting of Latoya Reeves, 49, also of Detroit. Ms. Reeves was the girlfriend of Defendant Custer. The defendant and the victim were residing together at the time of the incident.
On July 6, 2026, at approximately 2:14 a.m., Detroit police officers were dispatched to a residence in the 9300 block of Birwood for a reported unknown problem. Upon their arrival, officers located the victim inside the hallway of the home, suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest and right hand. Medics arrived on the scene and transported the victim to a local hospital where she succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced deceased.
It is alleged that Defendant Custer produced and fired a semi-automatic rifle at the victim, fatally wounding her. More complete facts and evidence will be placed on the record in court at the preliminary examination.
Keith Custer has been charged with one count of First-Degree Murder, one count of Felon in Possession of a Firearm, one count of Felon in Possession of Ammunition, and three counts of Felony Firearm. *
He was arraigned and remanded to jail this morning in 36th District Court before Magistrate Laura Echartea. The Probable Cause Conference is scheduled for July 20, 2026, at 8:30 a.m., and the Preliminary Examination is scheduled for July 27, 2026, at 1:45 p.m., before Judge Shawn Jacque.
