Detroit Man Charged in Fatal Shooting at Detroit Lounge

Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Michael Alan Harris, 42, of Detroit, in connection with the fatal shooting of Jalen Coats Stevens, 28, also of Detroit.
On January 4, 2026, at approximately 1:05 a.m., Detroit police officers were dispatched to a lounge in the 15900 block of Grand River Avenue for a reported stabbing. While officers were on the scene, it is alleged that a physical altercation between Defendant Harris and the victim escalated, and the defendant produced and fired a handgun, striking the victim in the left shoulder. Medics arrived on the scene and pronounced Mr. Coats Stevens deceased.
Michael Alan Harris has been charged with First-Degree Murder, Felony Firearm, and Resisting and Obstructing a Police Officer.*
Defendant Harris was arraigned and remanded to jail on Tuesday afternoon in 36th District Court before Magistrate Joseph Boyer. The Probable Cause Conference is scheduled for January 14, 2026, at 8:30 a.m., and the Preliminary Examination is scheduled for January 21, 2026, at 1:45 p.m., before Judge Shawn Jacque.
