Detroit Man Charged in Fatal Crash on Southfield Freeway Service Drive

Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Gregory Bester Louis Austin, 19, of Detroit, in connection with a car crash that killed nine-year-old Fatoumatu Diallo, and injured a 53-year-old woman, both of Detroit.
On February 20, 2026, at approximately 9:23 p.m., it is alleged that Defendant Austin was driving recklessly, at a high rate of speed, northbound on Southfield Freeway Service Drive near Tireman Avenue, when he disregarded the traffic light and stuck the passenger side of victims’ vehicle that was traveling eastbound on Tireman Avenue.
Medics arrived on the scene and transported the victims to a local hospital for treatment. Fatoumatu succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced deceased a short time later.
Gregory Bester Louis Austin has been charged with Reckless Driving Causing Death, Reckless Driving Causing Serious Impairment, Driving While License Suspended, Revoked, or Denied – Causing Death, and Driving While License Suspended, Revoked, or Denied – Causing Serious Impairment.*
He was arraigned this morning in 36th District Court before Magistrate Joseph Boyer and received a $50,000 cash/surety bond. A bond re-determination hearing is scheduled for February 26, 2026, at 9:00 a.m., before Judge William McConico. The Probable Cause Conference is scheduled for March 4, 2026, at 8:30 a.m., and the Preliminary Examination is scheduled for March 11, 2026, at 8:45 a.m., before Judge Shawn Jacque.
