DPD Officer Charged with Misconduct in Office and Other Crimes

Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Detroit police officer, Derond Martez Crawford, 34, in connection with an on-duty incident involving a 22-year-old woman, of Detroit.
On March 3, 2026, at approximately 10:40 p.m., in the 17600 block of Mound Road in Detroit, Officer Crawford conducted a traffic stop on the victim’s vehicle for improper plates. The victim was then placed under arrest for an outstanding warrant. During the arrest, it is alleged that Officer Crawford gained access to the victim’s phone so that her mother could be contacted. He discovered and sent explicit photos and digital images of the victim to himself without her consent. When her property was returned, she noticed the photos in emails that she did not send. On March 4, 2026, at approximately 7:40 a.m., it is further alleged that Officer Crawford went to the victim’s home while he was off duty. The victim did not come to the door.
Derond Martez Crawford has been charged with Using a Computer to Commit a Crime, Misconduct in Office, and Interfering with a Telecommunications Device. *
He was arraigned on March 7, 2026, before Magistrate Laura Echartea, and received a $100,000 personal bond with a GPS tether and house arrest. His other conditions of bond include having no direct or indirect contact with the victim, no use of a computer or telecommunications devices except for court, no social media, no contact with witnesses in the case, and he cannot carry firearms, weapons, or pepper spray. The Probable Cause Conference is scheduled for March 16, 2026, at 8:30 a.m., and the Preliminary Examination is scheduled for March 23, 2026, at 8:45 a.m., before Judge Marlena Taylor.
Prosecutor Kym Worthy said,” It is hard to imagine what the defendant was thinking when he engaged in this alleged conduct. He did not have an articulable reason to even look into the phone for anything other than her mother’s phone number in the first place and the steps he took after that intrusion were completely inappropriate.”
