Romulus Man Charged in Non-Fatal Shootings During Detroit Fireworks
Published on July 10, 2025
Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Alphonso Cooper, Jr., 19, of Romulus, in connection with the non-fatal shootings of a 17-year-old male, of Van Buren Township, and a 22-year-old woman, of Ferndale.
On June 23, 2025, at approximately 10:04 p.m., Detroit police officers were in the area of Randolph Street and Cadillac Square when they heard multiple gunshots. Officers responded to the area of Randolph Street and Larned Street where they observed the 17-year-old victim suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to his legs and the 22-year-old victim suffering from a gunshot wound to her right hand. Medics arrived on the scene and transported both victims to a local hospital for treatment.
It is alleged that the defendant and the 17-year-old victim were engaged in a physical altercation. It is further alleged that Defendant Cooper produced and fired a handgun multiple times, non-fatally wounding the victims, before fleeing the scene. The 22-year-old victim was an innocent bystander that had no involvement in the altercation. Investigation by the Detroit Police Department led to the arrest of the defendant on July 7, 2025.
Alphonso Cooper, Jr. has been charged with two counts of Assault with Intent to Murder, two counts of Assault with Intent to do Great Bodily Harm, one count of Carrying a Concealed Weapon, and four counts of Felony Firearm.*
“These shootings allegedly occurred because the defendant could not handle a disagreement and introduced a deadly weapon into the mix. This defendant did not care that there were hundreds of potential victims in the area. Bullets have no eyes, and it is extremely fortuitous that more fireworks attendees were not injured,” said Prosecutor Kym Worthy.
He was arraigned this morning in 36th District Court before Magistrate William Burton and given a $500,000 cash bond with a GPS tether and house arrest. A bond re-determination hearing is scheduled for July 14, 2025, at 9:00 a.m., before Judge William McConico. The Probable Cause Conference is scheduled for July 18, 2025, at 8:30 a.m., and the Preliminary Examination is scheduled for July 25, 2025, at 8:45 a.m., before Judge Marlena Taylor.
