Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Jay-Veon McKinney, 23, of Detroit, in connection with the fatal shooting of his 13-year-old sister, of Canton.

On July 29, 2025, at approximately 12:24 p.m., Canton police officers were dispatched to an apartment in the 8300 block of Honey Lane for a reported shooting. Upon their arrival, officers located the victim unresponsive, suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. Medics arrived on the scene and pronounced the victim deceased.

Approximately one hour prior to the shooting the defendant was playing with two pistols. It is alleged that the defendant was grossly negligent in unsafely handling a loaded firearm in the presence his two minor sisters. One of those pistols discharged, fatally wounding his 13-year-old sister.

Jay-Veon McKinney has been charged with Involuntary Manslaughter, which carries a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison, Felony Firearm, which carries a consecutive penalty of two years in prison, and Careless Discharge Causing Death, a high court misdemeanor, which carries a maximum penalty of two years in prison.*

“The alleged actions of this defendant were dangerous and criminal. Overwhelmingly, most people do not want their loved ones to lose their lives. Their actions can make that a reality. We will keep pushing this message because this child’s death was completely preventable,” said Prosecutor Kym Worthy.

He was arraigned this morning in 35th District Court before Judge James Plakas and received a $500,000 personal bond with a GPS home confinement tether. Defendant McKinney is not to possess firearms or weapons of any kind and not have any firearms or weapons of any kind in the residence where he will be confined. No other individuals other than the lease holders are allowed to reside at or visit Defendant McKinney’s residence.

The Probable Cause Conference is scheduled for August 14, 2025, at 9:30 a.m., before Judge Carl Barone, and the Preliminary Examination is scheduled for August 22, 2025, at 11:30 a.m., before Judge Michael Gerou.
