Detroit Man Charged in Non-Fatal Assault of Arizona Man

Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Antonio Jose Cancel, Jr., of Detroit, in connection with the assault of a 42-year-old man, of San Tan Valley, Arizona.
On September 16, 2025, at approximately 5:45 a.m., at a residence in the 1000 block of McKinstry Street in Detroit, it is alleged that Defendant Cancel and the victim were engaged in a verbal altercation that escalated to a physical altercation. It is then alleged that Defendant Cancel struck the victim multiple times with a machete, causing multiple lacerations to his head and body, non-fatally wounding him. Medics arrived on the scene and transported the victim to a local hospital for treatment.
Antonio Jose Cancel, Jr. has been charged with Assault with Intent to Murder, Assault with Intent to do Great Bodily Harm, Tampering with Evidence, and Felonious Assault.*
He was arraigned on September 30, 2025, in 36th District Court before Magistrate Jeffrey Kleparek and received a $500,000 cash/surety bond with a GPS tether. At the bond re-determination hearing on October 2, 2025, before Judge William McConico, Defendant Cancel’s bond was lowered to $100,000 cash/surety with a GPS tether and house arrest. The Probable Cause Conference is scheduled for October 9, 2025, at 8:30 a.m., and the Preliminary Examination is scheduled for October 15, 2025, 8:45 a.m., before Judge Marlena Taylor.
