California Man Charged in Tap-to-Pay Identity Theft Scheme

Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Jian Wei Li, 40, of Hayward, California, in connection with making purchases using stolen credit card information.

It is alleged that between May 21, 2025, and November 11, 2025, Defendant Li used mobile tap-to-pay platforms with stolen credit card information to purchase gift cards at multiple retailers in Wayne County.  Investigation by the Northville Police Department led to the arrest of the defendant on November 18, 2025.

Jian Wei Li has been charged with three counts of Identity Theft.*

He was arraigned yesterday afternoon in 35th District Court before Judge James Plakas and received a $100,000 cash, no surety bond..  If he posts the bond he is required to be on a GPS tether.  His Probable Cause Conference is on December 1,2025.
