Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged a 17-year-old juvenile male, two 16-year-old juvenile males, and a 14-year-old juvenile male, all of Detroit, in connection with a carjacking of a 67-year-old Detroit man's vehicle, that led to an officer involved shooting. The 17-year-old and two 16-year-old juvenile respondents have been adult designated. This means that upon conviction an adult designation allows the judge to have the option of sentencing the respondents as a juvenile, or as an adult, or to fashion a blended juvenile sentence with the option of imposing an adult sentence if the juveniles are not rehabilitated. On December 7, 2024, at approximately 10:47 p.m., The Detroit Police Department Commercial Auto Theft Section was conducting surveillance on a vehicle involved in a separate carjacking. While conducting surveillance, officers observed the juveniles exiting the surveilled vehicle and conducting a carjacking on the 67-year-old victim's vehicle at a gas station in the 1500 block of East Outer Drive.
The preliminary hearing was held on December 14, 2024, in the Lincoln Hall of Justice before Referee Anthony Crutchfield. The 17-year-old juvenile respondent and the two 16-year-old juvenile respondents were remanded to the Juvenile Detention Facility. The 14-year-old juvenile respondent was given a $5,000/10% bond. Updated information will be released when the Preliminary Examination date and time are confirmed. *The charges are allegations and defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty. #####
