Juvenile Charged in Non-Fatal Shooting of Two-Year-Old Brother

Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged a juvenile male, age 16, (DOB: 04/28/2005), of Detroit, in connection with the non-fatal shooting of his two-year-old brother.
On April 21, 2022, at approximately 2:50 a.m., Detroit police officers were dispatched to a residence in the 440 block of Alameda Street in Detroit for a reported shooting. Upon their arrival, officers located the child inside the home with a gunshot wound to the head and the left arm. Medics arrived on scene and transported him to a local hospital for treatment.
It is alleged that the two-year-old picked up an unsecured handgun in the home and shot himself in the head and arm.
The juvenile defendant has been charged with one count of Careless Discharge of a Firearm Causing Injury. *
The Preliminary Hearing was held today before Referee Leslie Graves, and the juvenile was remanded to the Juvenile Detention Facility. The Pre-Trial is scheduled for May 11, 2022, at 11:00 a.m., before Judge Frank Szymanski at the Lincoln Hall of Justice.
