Detroit Man Charged with Murder of 20-Year-Old Woman

Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Juma Reeves, 46 (DOB:03/26/1974), in connection with the homicide of Brandy Lashay Nelson, 20, both of Detroit. Ms. Nelson and the defendant had a child in common.
Ms. Nelson had been reported missing since February 16, 2021. On March 2, 2021, at 6:39 p.m. Detroit Police Officers were directed to a garage in the 5540 block of Drexel Street where they observed the lifeless body of Ms. Nelson. The victim was found in the garage by a male family member who was looking in the area for the victim. Ms. Nelson was pronounced dead at the scene and taken to the Wayne County Medical Examiner's Office where it was determined that her death was caused by multiple blunt force trauma.
After investigation by the Detroit Police Detroit Police the defendant was identified as a suspect and a warrant request was presented to the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office. August 17, 2021, the defendant was charged with First Degree Murder and Tampering with Evidence. It is alleged that the defendant killed Ms. Nelson with blunt force and tampered with evidence in the case. More specific facts and evidence will come out in court at the Preliminary Examination.
Reeves was arrested by the Detroit Police Department on August 17, 2021 and was arraigned today in 36th District Court. His Probable Cause Conference is on August 31, 2021 and his Preliminary Examination is on September 7, 2021 before Judge Kenneth King.
