Wayne County Commission Approves Canton Twp Replacement of ASR Roads

Funding will provide for improvements to local roads and pedestrian pathways

The Wayne County Commission approved an intergovernmental agreement between the Charter County of Wayne and the Charter Township of Canton not to exceed $1,000,000 for improvements to local roads and pedestrian pathways affected by alkali silica reaction (ASR) at their April 14 meeting.

Canton Township’s Board of Trustees approved this agreement on January 13, 2026, via Resolution No. 2026-3. Canton Township will contribute $4,787,000. The total project is in the estimated amount of $5,787,000.

“This intergovernmental agreement is another win for Canton Township,” commented Wayne County Commissioner Melissa Daub (D-Canton). “We will finally be rid of these crumbling ASR roads. I would like to thank my fellow commissioners for voting yes on this very important contract.”

Canton Township’s ASR-affected roads repair will include the replacement of deteriorated concrete pavement and pedestrian pathways, drainage structure adjustments, underdrain construction, Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant sidewalks, and together with necessary related work at different locations within the Township. The project will include the reconstruction of local roads and pedestrian pathways in 12 subdivisions in the Township, namely: Cavalier Village, Fellow Creek Estates, Forest Brook, Fox Run, Glengarry Village 3, Glengarry Village 4, 5 and 6, Kingston Estates, North Point, Nowland Estates, Riverpark, Sunflower Village, and Willow Homes.
