Wayne County Commissioners today issued a resolution of support for UAW workers currently on strike against the nation's Big Three automakers.

"Many of our commissioners have already walked the picket line with UAW members and this adds to our support," Chair Alisha Bell said.

Commissioner Jonathan C. Kinloch said he proposed the resolution, "as a statement of support for the UAW members living in all our communities."

Commissioner Al Haidous, whose district includes the Ford Motor Co. Wayne Assembly Plant said the issue involved, "hard working people who are trying to get a decent, living wage."

"These are people who often cannot achieve that without working a second job," Commissioner Haidous said.

Commissioner Sam Baydoun, whose district also includes the Ford Dearborn Truck Plant, recently brought food to striking workers on the commission's behalf. "People must understand that without unions there would be no middle class in this country," Commissioner Baydoun said.

Chair Bell and Commissioners Haidous and Baydoun, joined with fellow Commissioners Tim Killeen, Martha G. Scott, Cara A. Clemente, Irma Clark-Coleman, Monique Baker McCormick, Melissa Daub, Glenn S. Anderson, Raymond Basham and Joesph Palamara in seconding Commissioner Kinloch's resolution.

Commissioner Terry Marecki abstained from voting and Commissioner David Knezek was excused from the meeting.
