Wayne County Commissioners dressed in red on Thursday, Feb. 2, in support of National Go Red Day for women's heart health and declared February as American Heart Month throughout the county.
"Heart disease is the largest cause of death among Americans, claiming an estimated 700,000 lives each year, including those of more than 300,000 women" Chair Alisha Bell said. "The impact is also significantly greater for men and women of color."
National Wear Red Day (Feb. 3) was created by the American Heart Association and National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute in 2003 to call attention to the impact of heart disease on American families.
Commissioners unanimously supported the resolution by Chair Bell and Commissioner Cara Clemente (D-Lincoln Park) declaring February as heart month.
"With the impact so great, it's important that we do all we can to promote good heart health," Commissioner Clemente said.
The resolution calls on county residents to educate themselves about the risk posed by heart disease and strokes as well as warning signs and share that information with friends and loved ones.
