Commissioner Daub to hold community baby shower
Published on May 13, 2022
CANTON, MI – Wayne County Commissioner Melissa Daub (D-Canton) will be hosting a communitywide baby shower event to help support women who are affected by racial disparities in maternal and infant healthcare. The event will take place at the Village Arts Factory in Canton on May 17, from 5:00- 7:00pm.
Daub has invited special guests from the Wayne County Health Department and SisterFriends Detroit to provide discussion on gaps in healthcare revolving around pregnant people of color, and the steps public health departments can take to address these issues. Wayne County Commission Chair Alisha Bell will also speak.
"The risk of death from pregnancy complications is about three times higher for a Black woman than for a white woman" said Daub. "The loss of a mother or infant is a tragedy for her family and for the community, and these conversations are especially important in a time where the landscape of women's healthcare is rapidly changing."
Attendees are encouraged to bring diapers or baby wipes to be donated to the Wayne County Safe Sleep Initiative and SisterFriends Detroit. Everyone in the community is welcome to attend.
